new To build or not to destroy Lenana!!
A lot has been said about the Lenana land crisis which pits the school on one side and the local MP on another.
To fully understand the origin of the ‘dispute’ one must look at its origin.

The school land is under siege!!
The area MP is trying to get the Ministry to hive off 40 acres of the school land to construct a training and vocational centre!
If successful, all the land on the wrong side of the barrier encompassing the volleyball pitches (Banks & Braces) and a good bit of the forest near Block 3 would all go.

Old Boys Society's Annual Dinner Ball

"The Chairman of the Laibon Society requests the pleasure of your company (and partner) at the Old Boys Society's Annual Dinner Ball and Annual General Meeting on Friday 10th March 2006 at the Nairobi Club, off Ngong Road (near the Kenya National Library), starting at 6.30pm. Tickets are available at Kshs.1,600 per person from David Owino, ICDCI 5th Floor International House (Tel: 020 316305/6) or any of the Committee Members.

The Old Boys with Walk forms are kindly requested to continue collecting contributions, and remit together with the form(s) to the person you picked the form from by the end of February 2006.

You are also urged, for the purpose of the AGM, to kindly pay up your annual membership subscriptions of Kshs.1,000 and fill in a registration form as you purchase your dinner tickets."

The theme of this year's dinner is "Re-inventing Lenana" There are several initiatives at the school which are being spearheaded by the old boys. We want to encourage a lot more participation in returning the school to its former glory.

The Old Boys' Society is making great strides in assisting the school in many different areas and the committee is to be greatly commended for giving of their valuable time towards such a worthy cause. To my knowledge we have not had such a dedicated group of Old Boys over the past 25 years.

The Old Boys Society was relaunched in November 2004 at the School Hall, and elections for a new management committee held; the society has been moribund for a number of years due to various reasons.

We had our first AGM/Dinner after relaunch on Friday 4th February 2005 - a great success - at The Stanley, where activities for the year were outlined among other things; the main theme was to get old boys back to the school and involve them in activities beneficial to the school. With the aid of Mr. Fred Odhiambo (Class of '82) a senior manager at Barclays Bank, the Old Boys organised a Six-A-Side Soccer tournament in July 2005 to raise funds for rehabilitation of Upschool toilets; Kshs.400,000 was raised (roughly GBP3,500). The Old Boys then launched a programme for Six-A-Side soccer matches involving different old-boy classes every 2nd Sunday of the month at the school grounds, in a bid to enhance the society as well as have leaner, healthier old boys (!). This has had mixed results, but there at least is some activity going on in that area.

Elections for the Board of Governors for Lenana School were held in November 2005, and for the first time ever, the BoG has the Chairman and 4 members as former students.

Lenana has perennially had among its ranks, bright but destitute students from the marginalised areas of the country, a factor occasioning numerous drop-outs within the course of their 4yr study. The Lenana Fraternity decided to establish a Bursary Fund and as one of the fundraising events, we had a 25km Fundraising Walk covering the Karen-Langata-Hardy area, on the Founder's Day (last Saturday 28th January 2006). Contributions are ongoing till the end of February, and a Bursary Fund Trust is in place and Trustees comprise members from the PTA, BoG and Old Boys Society. We intend to have the Bursary established as an Endowment Fund where the principle is invested to generate interest, which is then used to offset fees arrears for the selected needy students.

The Committee is in the process of setting up a secretariat, and the school has been kind enough to offer the Pavilion on the Cricket Field for our use. Part of the proceeds from the Dinner will go towards the Bursary Fund, and in setting up the secretariat complete with communication and record-keeping facilities, as well as pay for a full-time administrator; there are now over 10,000 old boys in the diaspora."
